Dear ADSA members,

As some of you may know, the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA)  (in charge of high school curricula) has released drafts of significant proposed changes to Drama, Music and Dance syllabuses for Years 11-12.

These changes will gut these courses, largely taking the “performing” out of “performing arts”.

The draft syllabuses can be found here: https://www.nsw.gov.au/education-and-training/nesa/news/syllabus-consultations?fbclid=IwY2xjawGZJbtleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHTCiqc-nM2kx3rChGIwyxH-s5rjB11oJmTqDrxAt5pF0M24WaHUrq_VBrA_aem_uvZnkMfIpaIm7SGAKw5PCg

If approved, it is anticipated that these changes will lead to a significant decrease in enrolments for Drama, Music and Dance courses – with flow on negative effects for enrolments in these disciplines at universities, and also for the arts community and arts economy in NSW and beyond.

Colleagues: we can’t afford to lose any more theatre and performance studies departments.

If you’re a resident of NSW, could you please sign this petition: https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/la/Pages/ePetition-details.aspx?q=pH7Tit7rg_lpbKMGIhBUpA

And if you’re in Sydney on 25 November, please come to the event organised by the Create Centre which NESA’s CEO will be attending: https://events.humanitix.com/our-stories-our-syllabus

If you’re outside NSW, but keen to support us, please write to NESA to voice your concerns: nswcurriculumreview@nesa.nsw.edu.au

Thanks so much colleagues!

Best wishes,
